Studies have found that women who take Celexa (citalopram) during pregnancy are more likely to have a baby with a severe, life-threatening birth defect. The manufacturer of Celexa is now facing a growing number of lawsuits from women who allege that the risk of birth defects was not fully disclosed. Contact Schmidt & Clark, LLP for Celexa class action lawsuit information.

Celexa and Birth Defects
Celexa (citalopram) belongs to a class of antidepressants called selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Antidepressants are used by an estimated 6-13% of pregnant women, and SSRIs are the most popular. Celexa is Pregnancy Category C, which means the FDA recommends using it only if the potential risks to a fetus are lower than the benefits for the mother.
Evaluating the risk of using Celexa during pregnancy is impossible without complete risk information. Numerous lawsuits have been filed by women who allege that drug-makers are not adequately warning about this risk. For example, in 2011, a study published in the British Medical Journal linked Celexa to a 2.5-fold increased risk of “hole-in-the-heart” defects (also known as “septal heart defects”). The baseline risk in the general population is 0.5%.
In 2006 and 2011, the FDA also warned that taking SSRIs during pregnancy could increase the risk of Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN). They published the following Safety Communication to warn about the risk.
Celexa birth defects may include:
- Heart defects
- Septal defects (hole in the heart)
- Coarctation of the aorta
- Cleft lip or palate
- Neural tube defects (anencephaly, spina bifida)
- Cranial defects (craniosynostosis)
- Abdominal defects (omphalocele, gastroschisis)
- Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN)
- Fetal withdrawal (estimated to affect 30% of third-trimester SSRI-exposed infants)
- Premature birth
- Intellectual disabilities (Autism)
- Limb malformations (clubfoot)
- Fetal death
- And more
What’s the problem?
Schmidt & Clark, LLP is a nationally-recognized class action law firm. However, our attorneys are not filing a Celexa class action lawsuit. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits because we believe this is the best way to help our clients seek compensation and justice for their child’s injury.
If you decide to file a lawsuit, you won’t be alone. Lawsuits have been filed by over 300 women who took SSRIs during pregnancy and had a baby with a birth defect. These lawsuits are not centralized in a class action lawsuit — instead, they are located in a Multi-District Litigation (MDL) in federal court. Each woman has filed an individual personal injury lawsuit.
File a lawsuit and you could receive compensation for:
- Pain and suffering (physical and emotional)
- Medical treatment and rehabilitation
- Child born with disabilities
- Lost income or employment due to time off work
- Wrongful death
- Punitive damages
About Class Action Lawsuits
Class action lawsuits involve a lot of plaintiffs who have similar claims against the same defendant. All of the individual claims are consolidated into one claim. One plaintiff in the class action lawsuit is selected to represent the entire group. If a jury or awards compensation, members of the class action share it equally.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Celexa Class Action Lawsuit
Although there are some benefits to the class action approach, our lawyers are not filing a Celexa class action lawsuit. Most plaintiffs in a class action do not get the opportunity to take their case before a judge and jury (only the class representative’s case goes to court). You could be forced to accept high attorneys’ fees an a “low-ball settlement.” Our lawyers are representing our clients on an individual basis because we believe every woman who took Celexa and had a baby with a birth defect deserves a trial.
